Pakistan add recuperating batter Saim Ayub to Champions Trophy provisional squad
New Delhi: Pakistan have decided to add batter Saim Ayub in their provisional squad for the Champions Trophy that they are set to host from February 19. The opener is currently recuperating from a right ankle injury.
Even though the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet announce the squad officially but reports suggest that has most of the stars such as Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Nasim Shah, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan in it.
PCB selectors decided to include Saim as they have the option of replacing him if he fails to recover on time for the mega event as the International Cricket Council permits changes to the preliminary squad till February 13.
Healing in London
Saim is currently in a PCB funded trip in London, trying to work his way back to fitness. He has been examined by two top orthopaedic sports surgeons, the results of which are awaited.
“The reason for Saim still remaining in London is if the doctors recommend, he can do his rehabilitation with them there and the doctors can also keep a close watch on his progress,” a PCB source told PTI.
“But if the doctors inform the board this week, on the basis of the final test results, that he can rehabilitate in Lahore, Saim will return to the High Performance Centre here.”
Pakistan are set to host West Indies in a Test series starting in Multan on January 17, in which assistant coach Azhar Mahmood and team physio, who had accompanied Saim to London, have re-joined with the team.
PCB selectors who Saim would shake off his injury in time for the CT, having been the most consistent batters in recent times with two centuries in Pakistan’s three-match ODI series against South Africa.
