South Korea: President facing impeachment arrested in South Korea

South Korea: President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment in South Korea, was taken into custody from the Presidential Complex on Wednesday morning. Hundreds of investigators and police officers from the agency arrived at his presidential compound to arrest him. “The rule of law in this country has completely collapsed,” Yoon said in a video message recorded before being taken to the headquarters of the Anti-Corruption Agency. Yoon is the first president to be arrested while in office. He had been hiding in his Hannam-dong residence in the capital Seoul for several weeks and had vowed to “fight to the end” against attempts to remove him from power.

Although he is the first president to be arrested in South Korea, other high-profile figures, including former President Park Geun-hye and Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee, have also spent time in the Seoul detention center.

In fact, the President had announced martial law on December 3 last year. This step of the President had surprised the entire country. Although the martial law had ended within a few hours, after this a feeling of dissatisfaction against the President had spread in the country and the opposition parties started demanding impeachment proceedings against him. The President strongly defended his move and said it was a legal step under the rule of law.
