Singapore President Thurman reached Rajghat, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi: Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his wife on Thursday paid floral tributes at the mausoleum of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in Delhi. The visit was organized to mark the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between India and Singapore. India's Ministry of External Affairs shared a post on the occasion saying, “President of Singapore Tharman Shanmugaratnam paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat this morning. Bapu’s ideals and teachings continue to inspire us all.”

“President Draupadi Murmu formally welcomed His Excellency Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.

Singapore High Commissioner Simon Wong said President Tharman Shanmugaratnam's state visit to mark the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations began with a rousing reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He also said that Singaporeans from all over India had come to welcome the President.

Welcome and Guard of Honor

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a post on Twitter, “Welcome to a close friend! Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam was given a ceremonial welcome and guard of honor on his first state visit to India. “President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed President Thurman in the courtyard of Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

BJP national president and Union minister Jagat Prakash Nadda will meet Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Thursday as part of the 'Know BJP' initiative. Earlier on Wednesday, he had met Foreign Minister S Jaishankar. Jaishankar said the two discussed their cooperation in semiconductors, industrial parks, skill development, digitalization and trade development.

In a post on X, he said, “It was a pleasure to meet President of Singapore Tharman Shanmugaratnam today. Our cooperation in semiconductors, industrial parks, skill development, digitalization and trade development was discussed. As we celebrate 60 years of bilateral relations, I am confident that his state visit will provide new impetus to our comprehensive strategic partnership.”
