There may be major changes in the Constitution of Bangladesh, report submitted to Mohammad Yunus
The Constitution Reform Commission in Bangladesh has submitted its report to interim government chief Mohammad Yunus on Wednesday. This report proposes to change the state principles of secularism, socialism and nationalism.
The commission formed by the interim government after Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister due to the student-led movement has also proposed a bicameral Parliament for the country and limiting the tenure of the Prime Minister to two terms.
These three principles are among the four principles established in the country's Constitution as 'Fundamental Principles of State Policy'. Under the new proposals, only one “democracy” has been left unchanged.
Commission Chairman Ali Riaz said in a video statement, 'We are adopting five state principles – equality, human dignity, social justice, pluralism and democracy – to reflect the noble ideals of the 1971 liberation war and the aspirations of the people during the mass movement of 2024. Are proposing. In the report presented to Yunus, only 'democracy' has been kept in the Preamble of the Constitution along with four new principles.
The commission has recommended the formation of a bicameral parliament in which the lower house will be named National Assembly and the upper house will be named Senate with 105 and 400 seats respectively, the media unit of Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus quoted Riaz as saying in a statement.
The report suggested that the tenure of the proposed two houses would be four years instead of the current five-year tenure of Parliament. The Commission has suggested that the Lower House should be on the basis of majority and the Upper House should be on the basis of proportional representation.
The commission says that one of the main reasons for the 'autocratic authoritarianism' that Bangladesh faced in the last 16 years was the lack of institutional balance of power and the centralization of power in the Prime Minister's Office. It recommended limiting the tenure of the Prime Minister to two terms.
