Japanese police have arrested four Vietnamese nationals on suspicion of stealing property, blackmailing and illegally disposing of a body in a forest, local police said Wednesday.

The suspects, identified as 23-year-old Tu Minh Hai and three other Vietnamese men aged between 20 and 30, are accused of orchestrating the theft and subsequent burning of 29-year-old Bui Quang Tung’s body, the Mainichi reported.

According to the Chiba police, the men allegedly removed Tung’s body from his residence in Chiba on Feb. 6 of last year.

The suspects reportedly transported the body using two cars to a forest in Otaki Town, where they set one of the cars ablaze with the body inside. Tung’s remains were discovered on Feb. 10, NHK reported.

Authorities revealed that Hai and Tung had a dispute over profits from growing marijuana. In addition, police allege that between November and December 2023, the suspects broke into Tung’s home. They purportedly threatened Tung’s mother via video call to extort VND50 million (US$1,970) and stole Tung’s mobile phones along with other personal belongings.

An investigation is ongoing.
