Students protest in Singapore over Israel-Hamas war, police starts investigation

Singapore: Police have launched an investigation after students protested at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in Singapore over the Israel-Hamas war. The demonstration took place on Monday and students paid tribute to the deaths of Palestinian students by placing 100 pairs of shoes and a white shroud in front of the 'CREATE' research building.

Media reports on Thursday revealed that NUS has a research collaboration with Israel's 'Hebrew University of Jerusalem'. The student protest took place on Monday. According to the news of channel 'News Asia' on Thursday, the protesters have issued a statement along with the picture of the demonstration. The photo shows about 100 pairs of shoes and a white shroud in front of the 'CREATE' research building at NUS.

He said it was a “condolence and tribute” to the Palestinian students who lost their lives in the war. The group calls itself 'Students for Palestine Singapore' and describes itself as a student-led movement on its social media pages. Additionally, the group calls on Singapore to end educational, economic and political ties with Israel.

Organizers of the demonstration said they chose the CREATE research building because it has a research collaboration with Israel's Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Citing several other Singapore-Israel academic partnerships, organizers called on Singapore universities to end collaboration with Israeli universities.

Police confirmed that a report has been registered in this regard and investigation is ongoing. “This is an unauthorized act on our campus property and a police report has been lodged,” the channel quoted an NUS spokesperson as saying on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on Thursday that Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Maliki Osman would visit Jordan to deliver a check to a charitable organization and Singapore would send more humanitarian supplies to the Palestinians. “It is important to remember that there are people in some parts of the world who need help and they need it badly,” the channel quoted Minister Balakrishnan as saying. We will continue to support the Palestinians.”

He said Singapore would continue to work closely with the Palestinian Authority. The minister also reiterated that Singapore supports and expects a 'two-nation solution'. “This is the only way we can achieve a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace,” he said.
