Approval of 8th Pay Commission

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission for central government employees and pensioners. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced this. The decision comes as the dearness allowance (DA) for central government employees has exceeded 50% of their basic salary. At present, government employees and pensioners are receiving their salary and pension as per the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission.

How much increase in salary is expected?

The 7th Pay Commission, implemented in 2016, had increased the minimum wage from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. The fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission is likely to be between 2.5 to 2.8, due to which the salary of employees may increase by ₹ 40,000 to ₹ 45,000.

Minimum salary will be ₹ 51,480

After the 8th Pay Commission, the minimum basic pay may increase by 186%. This can go up to ₹51,480 per month. Besides, changes can also be made in pension, gratuity, EPF etc.

What is fitment factor?

Fitment factor is used to increase the salaries of central government employees and pensioners. The 7th Pay Commission had implemented a fitment factor of 2.57, resulting in a minimum salary of ₹18,000. There is a possibility of increasing it from 2.5 to 2.86 in the 8th Pay Commission.

How will the salary increase be calculated?

Suppose, your current basic salary is ₹40,000 per month. If the fitment factor of 2.5 in the 8th Pay Commission is applied, your new basic salary could be ₹1 lakh per month. Although dearness allowance will not be included initially, it will be added in the coming years.
