Siachen glacier gets 5G: High-speed connectivity reaches world’s highest battlefield

New Delhi: Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield, is now connected to a 5G network. This historic development, a collaboration between Reliance Jio and the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, brings high-speed internet and cellular communication to troops stationed at 16,000 feet in the Karakoram Range.

This technological leap significantly improves communication capabilities in one of the most challenging environments on earth. Soldiers stationed in Siachen endure extreme subzero temperatures, often plummeting to -50 degrees Celsius, which previously hampered communication efforts. They relied on outdated methods like landlines and infrequent visits to designated phone booths to contact their families. The introduction of 4G and 5G services promises faster, more reliable, and real-time connectivity, greatly enhancing their ability to communicate.


The successful deployment was a joint operation between the Indian Army’s Signallers and Jio’s technical team. The Army facilitated the airlifting of pre-configured equipment, enabling rapid installation despite the harsh conditions. The 14 Corps announced, “Fire and Fury Signallers and Siachen Warriors overcame harsh terrain and extreme temperatures below -40°C to install the first-ever 5G Base Transceiver Station (BTS) at North Glacier.”

The benefits of this new infrastructure are twofold.
