Kangana Ranaut BEATS Ajay Devgn, Rasha Thadani’s film on opening day, earns Rs…
Despite both, Emergency and Azaad, drawing attention, Emergency has emerged as the stronger performer at the box office.
On January 17, 2025, two highly-awaited films, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency and Ajay Devgn’s Azaadhit the silver screen. Both movies, which had been eagerly awaited by audiences for months, made a significant impact on their opening day. However, despite both films drawing attention, Emergency has emerged as the stronger performer at the box office.
Emergency Leads The Box Office
According to early reports from Sack girl, Emergency earned Rs 2.39 crores on its opening day. Given the positive trends from the first day, Emergency is expected to see growth over the weekend, but it will need to maintain its momentum to ensure a strong overall performance.
In contrast, Azaad had a weaker debut despite the presence of star power and attractive ticket prices. The film, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, opened with just Rs 1.60 crores on its first day. While the film features a talented ensemble cast, including Ajay Devgn, Diana Penty, and newcomers Aaman Devgn and Rasha Thadani, it struggled to fully capture the audience’s attention. The love drama, set against the backdrop of India’s pre-independence era, couldn’t leverage the anticipation built around its patriotic themes and strong performances, leading to a lukewarm reception.
About Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency
Emergency is written, directed, and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, who also stars in the film as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film, based on the Indian Emergency, portrays pivotal political events of the time. Originally scheduled for a September 2024 release, the film was postponed due to certification delays but finally saw the light of day on January 17, 2025. Alongside Kangana Ranaut, the film features Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
About Ajay Devgn’s Azaad
Azaad is a historical drama set in pre-independence India and directed by Abhishek Kapoor. The film stars Ajay Devgn as Vikram Singh, a dacoit fighting for the freedom of his people, and Diana Penty as Janki, the landlord’s daughter who defies societal norms. The movie explores themes of loyalty, rebellion, and sacrifice against the backdrop of British oppression. Despite its engaging storyline and star-studded cast, the film’s box office performance on opening day fell short of expectations.
