A recently released trailer for the proposed Mario vs. Sonic movie has led to a frenzy among fans, who have since questioned its legitimacy. The video finally puts Nintendo and SEGA’s iconic mascots Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog against one another, which has long been a dream for the admirers of the two franchises. But is the trailer actually authentic or a product of fans’ imaginative thinking?

The said Mario vs. Sonic trailer is a fan-made creation, as no official update on the project has come out to date.
The said video was actually posted by the popular YouTube channel KH Studiowhich has a long history of releasing concept trailers of eagerly anticipated movies. As is the precedence, their most recent project involving Mario and Sonic also became a hit on the internet, garnering over 336K views in two days.

The snippet showcases parts of The Super Mario Bros Movie, and the Sonic trilogy mashed together. The fake Mario vs. Sonic trailer also features some real-world scenes that showcase the world engulfed in various disasters. Additionally, viewers get to see Mario face off against the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog in two AI-generated sequences.
Have Nintendo and SEGA partnered for a Sonic vs. Mario movie?
At the time of writing, neither Nintendo nor SEGA have released any word regarding a potential partnership.
The two corporations’ relationship has yet to extend the boundaries of the Olympics, which allowed them to collaborate on video games covering the global sporting event until 2024. In an earlier interview with DexertoSonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler also highlighted the difficulties in making a crossover movie between Mario and Sonic, given the current trajectory of the two film series.
Fowler stated, “Obviously, our characters are a little bit rendered more photorealistically so they can integrate into our live-action world and with our humans. So that kind of crossover, it’s hard to say.” Nevertheless, he maintained faith that such a project could happen in the future, remarking, “I don’t think anybody would ever rule out anything and we’re certainly open to anything in terms of pitches and ideas. So, yeah, who’s to say?”
While KH Studio’s Mario vs. Sonic trailer is a certified fan-made video, a movie featuring the two heavyweight characters of the gaming industry could certainly happen one day.
