Pune Mumbai Expressway Speed Limit Fines Termed As ‘Extortion’, ‘Honey Trap’ By Social Media Users

Frustration has been growing among drivers of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, following a recent social media post that raised concerns about unclear speed limits and what many consider to be excessive fines. The post, shared by an X user named “The Kaipullai,” criticizes drivers being penalized despite maintaining appropriate speeds, attributing the issue to poor communication from authorities. The user referred to the situation as a “money hack” by the government, particularly criticizing the installation of speed cameras along the expressway in areas such as Vashi, Panvel, and Pune.

Confusion Over Speed Limits and Fines on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The Kaipullai pointed out that drivers are being fined even when traveling within acceptable speed limitsdue to a lack of proper communication regarding speed restrictions. The user suggested that, on top of toll fees, drivers should now expect to pay an additional Rs 2000 in speeding fines each time they travel between Mumbai and Pune. Sharing a personal experience, The Kaipullai recounted being fined for driving 70 kmph on cruise control in Panvel, even though the speed limit was allegedly 60 kmph.

They criticized the government for implementing arbitrary speed limits without informing motorists, calling it an “infinite money hack” where authorities continue to collect money from drivers.

Drivers Express Frustration Over Speed Traps and High Toll Charges

Aviation expert Sanjay Lazar shared a similar experience, mentioning that he was fined for driving at 65 kmph a few months ago. He took to Twitter, tagging Pune authorities and urging them to review and remove these “speed traps” that disrupt motorists. Meanwhile, another user, Birender Dhanoa, expressed concerns about the high toll charges, pointing out that he paid Rs 760 for a 500-kilometre trip, which he considered excessive despite recent road improvements.

The rising costs of using the expressway, coupled with the unclear enforcement of speed limits, have led to growing dissatisfaction among drivers, as highlighted by these complaints.
