A 16-year-old rape victim tried to commit suicide by consuming poison in the court premises on Friday, apparently over some differences with her parents. The girl had gone to the POCSO court along with her parents for a hearing related to her alleged rape case.

Her mother had filed an FIR on June 6, 2024, alleging that Keshav Das (21) had raped her daughter.

Acting on the complaint, the police arrested the accused.

His mother testified first on Friday. Accused's lawyer Itihas Lenka said that during the cross-examination of his father, the minor went to the toilet and consumed poison.

He was taken to the District Government Hospital in Kendrapara and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition became critical. “Police are investigating the matter,” said IIC Dilip Sahu of Kendrapara Town police station.
