Sanjay Manjrekar drops a massive statement regarding Rohit Sharma’s future
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian cricketer, said that he firmly believes that it is up to Rohit Sharma to decide when to retire from international cricket, although he feels the selectors could also have a part to play. Following India’s 3-1 Test series defeat in Australia, Rohit was able to muster only 31 runs over five innings; his stepping down from the Sydney Test has added to speculation on his international future.
“I think in Indian cricket, there was the example of Tendulkar choosing his own career’s endpoint. Rohit Sharma will, today, determine when to step down. A player decides when he wants to retire from cricket; whether or not he will still go on contributing is up to him. Ultimately though the selectors will have their role to play- in this case, Ajit Agarkar and co,” said Manjrekar in an episode of ‘Deep Point’ podcast by Star Sports.
Deep Dasgupta, the former India wicketkeeper-batter, argued that comparisons of the two are irrelevant. Instead, he argued that it is upon Rohit to address the issues which will be relevant in keeping his selection.
“Let us not lump Rohit and Virat together. Just like in the previous generation of Indian cricket, where Sachin (Tendulkar) and Rahul (Dravid) were different, you have to assess each player on an individual basis.”
“The next five months will be crucial for Rohit in terms of international white-ball cricket and IPL. That will be a determining period for his performances in those formats. After that, things like form in first-class cricket, fitness levels, and performances in the Champions Trophy will contribute. The final say lies with the selectors.”
