Mumbai Police had come to know from CCTV footage that Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, the accused in the attack on Saif Ali, had gone to Dadar and Bandra. Mumbai Police investigated all the mobile numbers active there. A mobile number was active at Saif Ali Khan's house, Bandra and Dadar. Mumbai Police reached the number from where the call was made. There the photo was shown to the person who received Shariful's call. On which he recognized the accused. People gave more information to the police about the person who attacked Saif. After this, Mumbai Police intensified the search for him and finally caught Shariful from Thane at around 2 pm on Saturday night.

When caught by the police, Shariful tried to mislead by telling his name as Vijay Das, BJ etc., but after being strict, he revealed his real name. Mumbai Police suspects that he is a citizen of Bangladesh. It has also been claimed in some media reports that Shariful had once gone to Saif Ali Khan's house for housekeeping work. It is being told that after the guard of the apartment fell asleep, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad reached the 11th floor by the stairs. From there, he entered Saif's house through the duct and hid in the washroom near the children's room. Saif Ali Khan was attacked by Shariful around 2.30 am on January 16. After that he absconded.
