RG Kar Rape case: Court's decision in the rape and murder case of a female doctor, accused Sanjay Roy found guilty

Kolkata: The Sessions Court in Sealdah has convicted the accused Sanjay Roy in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College. This case was going on for a long time, in which serious allegations were made against Sanjay Roy. The court found Sanjay Roy guilty on the basis of evidence and witnesses. Justice Anirban Das delivered the verdict at 2.30 pm and said the sentence would be announced on Monday (January 20).

The incident occurred on 9 August 2024. This incident once again reminded people of the Nirbhaya rape case. There were large scale demonstrations across the country regarding this incident. In this case, the police had made Sanjay Roy, who was a civic volunteer in Kolkata Police, an accused. He is accused of committing this heinous crime in the seminar hall of the hospital.

The hearing of this case took 57 days. The court has given its verdict after 162 days. CBI has demanded death penalty for accused Sanjay from the court. While presenting his side, convict Sanjay Roy said, “I have been implicated in this case. I did not do this work. Those who have done this have been let go. An IPS is involved in this.”

Full details of the incident

August 9, 2024: The semi-nude body of the trainee doctor was found on the third floor of the seminar hall of the hospital.

10 August: Kolkata Police detained accused Sanjay Roy. After this the first protest of doctors started in West Bengal.

12 August: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave an ultimatum to Kolkata Police to resolve the matter within 7 days. Also, hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh resigned from his post due to protest.

13 August: The Calcutta High Court took the matter seriously and termed it “very appalling”. The court appealed to the doctors to resume their services. Along with this, NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) also took cognizance of this matter.

14 August: The High Court sent former Principal of RG Kar Sandeep Ghosh on long leave and handed over the case to CBI. CBI took the accused into its custody.

August 15: On the night of Independence Day, a mob attacked RG Kar Hospital and vandalized the emergency department.

16 August: Police arrested 19 people on charges of sabotage.

20 August: The Supreme Court ordered the West Bengal government and the Kolkata Police to submit a status report of the case.

24 August: Lie detector test was conducted on the main accused and 6 others.

2 September: CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh on charges of financial irregularities.

14 September: CBI again arrested Sandeep Ghosh and Kolkata Police officer Abhijit Mandal for delaying the FIR and missing evidence.

7 October: CBI filed charge sheet against Sanjay Roy in the case of rape and murder.

11 November: The trial started in Sealdah Court.

January 18, 2025: Sealdah Court will give its verdict in this case today.
