A man in Can Tho in the Mekong Delta has been arrested for defrauding 31 individuals out of more than VND3 billion ($118,437) with promises of employment in South Korea.
Tran Thanh Xuyen, 34, was arrested by the police of Can Tho on Friday to be investigated for obtaining property by fraud.
Xuyen used to work in South Korea before returning to Vietnam in 2016. He then opened a Korean restaurant in Can Tho.
Due to suffering losses in business and needing the money to pay off debts, Xuyen tried to trick people who wanted to go to South Korea for work. Xuyen said he opened the Sky Earth company in Binh Thuan in central Vietnam, and that he can receive people’s documents to help them work in South Korea.
To be eligible to work abroad, people would need to sign contracts to become employees at Xuyen’s company. Xuyen then told people that they would come to South Korea to work at a car component manufacturing company. Their salaries can go up to VND70 million per month, Xuyen said.
A total of 31 people sent money to Xuyen. He then have people masquerade as employees at the South Korean consulate to interview victims, with the intention of making them pay more money in the process.
After waiting for long periods of time and not being allowed to go to South Korea, several victims accused Xuyen of fraud.
