Tesfay and Chepkemoi won men's and women's title in Mumbai Marathon

Berhane Tesfaye of Eritrea won the men's title while Kenya's Joyce Chepkemoi Tele won the women's title at the Mumbai Marathon here on Sunday.

Tesfaye took two hours, 11 minutes and 44 seconds to complete the distance of 42.195 km. This is the first international full marathon title for this 38 year old runner.

Runners from Eritrea, a small country in Africa, secured the first two positions in the men's category. Tesfaye's compatriot Merhawi Kessete finished second with a time of 2:11:50. Ethiopia's Tesfaye Demeke (2:11:56) took third place.

Tesfaye said after becoming champion, “The first part of the race went smoothly and I was focused on maintaining my pace. After 25 kilometers, I changed my strategy and started focusing on staying on top, instead of ignoring time. This victory means a lot to me. This is a testament to my hard work and training.

Meanwhile, Tele won the women's elite title with a timing of 2:24:56. Bahrain's Shitaye Eshete (2:25:29) came second and Ethiopia's Madina Demme Armino (2:27:58) came third. Among Indian players, Anish Thapa (2:17:23) stood first in the men's category. Nirmaben Thakor (2:50:06) was successful in defending her title in the women's category. Nirmaben stood 16th overall.

Man Singh finished second among Indian men with a timing of 2:17:37, while two-time winner T Gopi finished third in 2:19:59. Defending champion Srinu Bugatha (2:20:43) finished fifth. Among Indian women, Sonika Parmar finished second with a timing of 2:50:55 while Sonam (2:55:45) finished third. Sawan Barwal and Stanzin Dolkar won the half marathon in men's and women's categories respectively. In this, Sawan set a meet record of 1:04.37.
