Pakistan: Preparation for strict action against terrorists, government starts operation in disturbed areas of Kurram

Peshawar: The government of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday launched an operation in the troubled areas of Kurram district after an attack on a convoy of aid workers carrying relief materials in Parachinar. The operation was launched in four village councils of Lower Kurram district – Bagan, Mandori, Chapri and Chapripao – to secure roads and maintain lasting peace in the area, where dozens of people have been killed in communal clashes since November, officials said. 130 people died in Shia-Sunni communal violence

Officials said security forces will assist the police and civil administration in action against the miscreants and the government suspects that some miscreants have infiltrated among the citizens. At least 130 people have lost their lives so far in the communal violence that broke out between Shia and Sunni communities in Kurram in November last year. There are reports of severe shortages of food and medicine due to weeks-long road blockades in the area. A peace deal was reached between the warring communities on January 1, but the road connecting Parachinar is still blocked. Under the peace deal, residents promised to give up their weapons in a phased manner within 15 days, while the destruction of local bunkers is to be completed by February 2025.

Attack on aid convoy

Aid convoys were repeatedly attacked in Kurram district in January, resulting in casualties. On Thursday, an aid convoy of 35 vehicles heading to Parachinar was attacked in Bagan, killing five drivers, a passenger and two security personnel. According to the news of 'Geo News', the district administration had said that six attackers were killed in retaliation and shelling from the helicopter.
