'IITian Baba' Abhey Singh Expelled from Juna Akhara for Disrespecting Guru | Read

‘Abhey Singh, popularly known as ‘IITian Baba’ for his transition from an aerospace engineer to a spiritual figure, has been expelled from the Juna Akhara during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The expulsion follows allegations of disrespect towards his Guru, Mahant Someshwar Puri.

The Juna Akhara, one of the prominent monastic orders participating in the Kumbh Mela, took this disciplinary action citing Singh’s violation of the Guru-Shishya (master-disciple) tradition. Chief Patron Mahant Hari Giri stated, “The act of Abhey Singh goes against the Guru-Shishya tradition and the principles of Sanyas. Disrespecting one’s Guru shows a lack of respect for Sanatan Dharma and the Akhara.”

The controversy arose after a video surfaced in which Singh referred to his Guru as “pagal” (mad) following a disagreement. This incident led to his expulsion, with the Akhara emphasizing the importance of discipline and respect within its ranks. Mahant Hari Giri added, “Discipline is of utmost importance in Juna Akhara, and no one is above it—not me, nor anyone like Singh.”

In response to the expulsion, Abhey Singh has expressed his commitment to the path of Sanatan Dharma and has sought refuge in the camp of another saint. He acknowledged the Akhara’s decision and indicated his intention to continue his spiritual journey independently.

Abhey Singh gained widespread attention during the Maha Kumbh Mela after an interview highlighted his unique background as an IIT Bombay graduate who left a promising engineering career to embrace spirituality. His story resonated with many, making him a notable figure at the festival.

The Juna Akhara has clarified that Singh will remain barred from their camp and its surroundings until he demonstrates adherence to their disciplinary standards and respect for the Guru-Shishya tradition. This incident underscores the strict codes of conduct upheld by monastic orders participating in the Kumbh Mela.
