Kolkata. Additional District Judge in Sealdah, Kolkata has sentenced Sanjay Rai, who was found guilty of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College. On Saturday, the court had convicted Sanjay Rai of rape and murder of a doctor. The court has sentenced Sanjay Rai to life imprisonment. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. Now Sanjay Rai has the option to challenge his sentence in the Calcutta High Court. If the same punishment remains intact from there, then Sanjay Rai will be left with the option of going to the Supreme Court.
Sanjay Rai was presented in Sealdah Court for sentencing. Sanjay Rai once again said that he is innocent. Earlier, when the court had convicted him, Sanjay Rai had said that he had not raped and murdered the doctor. Sanjay Rai had argued that he wears a garland. If he had committed rape and murder of the doctor, the chain would have been broken. The court refused to accept any of his arguments. She was undergoing doctor training at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. He was on duty on the evening of 8th August. On August 9, the doctor's body was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College. Through postmortem, it was revealed that she had been raped and murdered. Kolkata Police, while investigating the incident, arrested its own civic volunteer Sanjay Rai on August 10.
Later this matter reached Calcutta High Court. The High Court handed over the investigation to the CBI. CBI had also given charge sheet against Sanjay Rai. CBI had appealed to the court that the case of rape and murder of a doctor in RG Kar Medical College is the rarest of rare. In such a situation, the culprit Sanjay Rai should be given death sentence. The court, not accepting the appeal of CBI, has sentenced Sanjay Rai to life imprisonment. If CBI wants, it can go to Calcutta High Court to get death penalty.
