The Government of India has announced the new Ration Card Rules 2025 with the aim of making the ration distribution system more transparent and effective. These rules have come into effect from January 1, 2025. Now only those persons will get the benefit of free ration, who fulfill the prescribed rules. Under these changes, e-KYC has been made mandatory to ensure that only genuine needy people avail the benefits of the scheme. Its main objective is to bring ease in the ration distribution system and to prevent unsuitable persons from availing the benefits. Along with making e-KYC mandatory, the government has also fixed the basis of income and assets. Under these rules, certain rules like income limit, asset limit, and vehicle ownership have been kept in mind, so that the benefits of the ration scheme reach only the needy persons.
These are the new rules
According to the new rules, different income and asset limits have been set in urban and rural areas. Income limit in urban areas – Rs 3 lakh per annum Income limit in rural areas – Rs 2 lakh per annum Additionally, owners of flats larger than 100 sq m in urban areas or owners of plots larger than 100 sq m in rural areas are ineligible for the scheme.
