Neeraj Chopra and Himani Mor’s wedding details revealed: The star athlete shares why he chose this time to marry, his stance on dowry, and how the intimate Himachal Pradesh celebration focused on family and traditions.
New Delhi: Neeraj Choprathe two-time Olympic medalist, recently tied the knot with Himani Morea former tennis player and sports management graduate. On Sunday, the 27-year-old shared pictures from their intimate mountain wedding, which was attended by close family members only.
Neeraj Chopra’s uncle, Surendra Choprarevealed that the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist met Himani in the USA. After their meeting, Neeraj sought permission from his family, and upon receiving their approval, he decided to marry Himani.
“Both Neeraj and Himani are athletes and knew each other. They met in the US, and Neeraj knew exactly who he wanted to spend his life with. After seeking permission from the family, he decided to marry Himani,” said Surendra Chopra in an interview with Aaj Tak.
“It is a mix of love and arranged marriage. Neeraj and Himani sought permission from their parents, and once they had the approval, they proceeded with the wedding,” he added.
Neeraj Chopra’s uncle also revealed that he organized the three-day wedding celebrations, which took place from January 14 to 16 in Himachal Pradesh. Interestingly, even the ‘pandit’ who officiated the ceremony was unaware of Neeraj Chopra’s identity.
Neeraj Chopra’s Stance on Dowry
Neeraj Chopra, the silver medalist at the Paris Olympics 2024, made it clear that he did not accept any dowry for his marriage. Instead, his family accepted a token amount of INR 1 as ‘shagun’. Neeraj’s uncle emphasized, “We have always been against the practice of dowry. Our family doesn’t believe in it. We just took one rupee as ‘shagun’.”
Pre-Wedding Rituals and Family Time
Before the wedding, Himani also visited Neeraj’s village for pre-marriage rituals, where she stayed for 14 hours. Neeraj’s uncle shared that the wedding was planned at this time due to Neeraj’s upcoming competitions over the next two years, which made it difficult to delay the marriage further.
A Private Celebration
The wedding, which took place in Himachal Pradesh, was a private, family affair with only around 65-70 people in attendance. “It wasn’t a big function; it was a family function. Only people from both the families were there,” said Surendra Chopra. He added, “It was a destination wedding in Himachal Pradesh. We spent three days in the mountains. Neeraj is a normal person. It was good-quality family time.”
