The Hanoi People’s Committee has announced plans to install over 40,000 new surveillance cameras across the capital during the 2025–2030 period.
The move is part of a project aimed at bolstering public safety, traffic management, and urban order.
Under the plan, 16,000 of the cameras will be designated for state management, focusing on traffic safety, environmental oversight and city maintenance. Of the total number, 12,000 will be pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras capable of changing direction and zooming in or out, while the remaining 28,000 will be stationary.
In terms of functionality, more than 23,700 cameras will be dedicated to maintaining order and security, as well as detecting and handling violations. Around 16,250 will monitor traffic, environmental conditions and urban issues, and 230 will be used for national defense. Funding for the massive surveillance expansion will come from various sources, including the national budget.
Currently, Hanoi operates roughly 19,400 cameras, including around 4,000 PTZ devices.
City officials say the existing network remains limited and does not yet cover all areas of the capital, underscoring the need for further expansion.
