RG Kar Medical College Rape Case: Convict Sanjay Roy sentenced to life imprisonment, will have to remain in jail for the rest of his life.

Desk: The court has sentenced Sanjay Roy, convicted in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, to life imprisonment. The biggest thing about the punishment is that Sanjay Rai will have to remain in jail for the rest of his life.

Death or life imprisonment to Sanjay Roy?

Under the sections under which Roy has been convicted by the Sessions Court of Sealdah, Kolkata, he can face a minimum of life imprisonment while the maximum of death penalty. Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah Court on Saturday sentenced Roy to death. On August 9 last year, a postgraduate trainee female doctor was found guilty of rape and murder in the hospital. In this case, the CBI along with the family of the victim doctor had also sought death sentence. However, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment instead of death sentence. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50 thousand on guilty Sanjay. Let us tell you that the court did not consider this case as rare. That's why death sentence has not been awarded.

Before sentencing, the sessions court of Sealdah, Kolkata told Sanjay Roy that 'I had already told you that all the charges against you like rape and murder have been proved. What would you like to say about the possible punishment?' On this Sanjay said, 'I have been implicated without any reason. I always wear a Rudraksh rosary, if I had committed a crime the rosary would have broken at the crime scene itself. I was not allowed to speak. Many papers were forcibly signed.

Outrage over rape case

This heinous crime caused outrage across the country and protests continued for a long time. Sanjay was arrested on August 10, 2024, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital. The judge has convicted him under sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS).

Demand for hanging?

Under Section 64 (misdeed) of BNS, there is a provision of minimum punishment of 10 years, which can go up to life imprisonment. Under Section 66, there is a provision of minimum punishment of 20 years and it can go up to life imprisonment. Under Section 103(1) (murder) of BNS, there is a provision of death penalty or life imprisonment for the culprit.

Sanjay Roy declared himself innocent

The Calcutta High Court had transferred the investigation of the case from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The judge said Roy's statement would be heard at 12.30 pm and the sentence would be pronounced thereafter. When the verdict was announced on Saturday, Roy claimed in the court that he had been framed.
