Ajay Devgan's nephew Aman Devgan and Raveena Tandon's daughter Rasha Thadani made her Bollywood debut with the film 'Azad'. The trailer and promotion of the film looked quite promising, but after its release on January 17, 2025, the audience response was not as expected. The film collected only Rs 1.5 crore on the opening day. Even Ajay Devgan's important role and his stardom failed to attract the audience to the theaters.
Tough competition from 'Emergency'
The big competition of 'Azad' was with Kangana Ranaut's much awaited film 'Emergency'. It was a political drama, in which Kangana played the role of Indira Gandhi. The film featured seasoned actors like Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhary. Apart from this, Kangana also took charge of the direction, writing and production of the film. 'Emergency' received mixed reviews, but Kangana's character and strong star cast pulled the audience to the theatres. At the same time, the audience did not immediately express confidence in the new faces in 'Azad'.
Impact of changing cinema
Today's audience no longer depends only on fantasy and love stories. With the advent of OTT platforms, world cinema is now within everyone's reach. Audiences now expect a strong story and strong performances. Films like 'Azaad' needed to move out of old style love stories and serve something new.
Nepotism and talent debate
The debate of nepotism could also be a major reason behind the film's flop. When a film is based on star kids, the expectations of the audience increase. However, this debate sometimes proves to be harmful even for the talented Napo kids.
Not only did the stars of 'Azaad' find it difficult to connect with the audience, but the film's weak story also sabotaged their efforts.
