CBI appeals to High Court to hang convict Sanjay Roy in Kolkata Medical College rape-murder case.
New Delhi. A big update has come to light in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. CBI has filed an appeal in the High Court against the life sentence of convict Sanjay Roy, demanding death sentence. Earlier, the Sealdah Court on Saturday had convicted Sanjay Roy in this heinous crime and on Monday sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The judge said- this is not the rarest of rare case.
Sealdah Court Judge Anirban Das said in his decision that this case does not fall in the category of “rarest of rare”, hence the culprit cannot be given death sentence. The court ordered Sanjay Roy to spend his entire life in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. Along with this, the state government was directed to give compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim's family.
The family refused to accept compensation
However, the victim's family flatly refused to accept compensation. He said that he does not want money but justice. Before the verdict, the court heard the arguments of convict Sanjay, CBI and the victim's family.

Sanjay Roy's family said on the decision that they have no objection to it. His mother said, “I can understand the pain of the victim's family, I too have daughters. Even if Sanjay is hanged, we will not appeal against the verdict.”

On the night of August 8, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College-Hospital. After the incident, CBI investigated and on January 18, the accused was convicted by the court. Sentencing took place on 20 January. After 164 days of hearing, the court gave its 160-page verdict.

Politics has also intensified regarding this case. The opposition has raised questions on the state government regarding law and order. Giving her reaction on this matter, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government has shown complete seriousness in this matter and is committed to providing justice to the victim's family.
