Infants born to healthy mothers have better immunity, cognitive health: Study

New Delhi: Underpinning the importance of robust maternal care to build a healthy India, leading experts from the mother and Child Departments of prominent hospitals called for investing in and improving care quality. According to them, robust maternal care would go a long way in improving the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR), which measures the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in a given time.

India’s healthcare institutions are spearheading a revolution in maternal and child care, ensuring the well-being of mothers and their babies while laying the foundation for a healthier and stronger nation. With the decline from 130 per 100,000 live births in 2014-16 to 97 per 100,000 live births in 2018-20, according to Indian Government Data (NFHS-5), India’s commitment to advancing maternal health is yielding transformative results.

High-quality maternal care encompasses prenatal checkups, balanced nutrition, institutional deliveries, and postnatal support. These components not only safeguard the health of mothers and children but also contribute significantly to India’s overall growth. Studies affirm that infants born to healthy mothers exhibit advanced cognitive skills, robust immune systems, and better overall health. The infant mortality rate (IMR) has also seen a remarkable decline from 44 per 1,000 live births in 2005 to 27 per 1,000 live births in 2020.

Dr. Himani Sharma, Clinical Head and Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cocoon Hospital said, “Robust maternal care is necessary for a healthy India. Early detection and timely care enable the successful management of high-risk pregnancies.”

“It is crucial for expectant mothers to prioritize regular screenings, consume nutritious food, and access advanced healthcare facilities. Equally important is postpartum care. A mother’s life undergoes profound changes post-delivery, and addressing mental health, postpartum nutrition, and breastfeeding guidance ensures her holistic recovery and the child’s well-being,” added by Dr. Himani Sharma

Investing in maternity care is an investment in India’s future. With continued focus on maternal health, India can ensure a healthier generation that contributes to a prosperous nation. According to experts, a healthy mother produces a healthy child, and a healthy generation builds a stronger India.

Dr Pavitra Sharma, Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Apollo Spectra, “Ensuring quality maternal care means offering comprehensive and holistic services to expectant mothers. Personalized care and timely medical interventions are key to fostering trust and improving outcomes in maternal health.”

Experts believe that good maternal health has a direct impact on the nation’s economic and social success. Healthy mothers give birth to healthy children, who grow to become productive adults.

“Decreasing maternal mortality rates signify advancements in healthcare infrastructure and awareness. A country with a strong maternal healthcare system benefits from reduced healthcare costs, a lower disease burden, and a more resilient workforce. Our primary focus on maternal health is not just about healthcare—it’s about fostering national progress,” said Dr Anitha N, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Gynaec Laparoscopic Surgery & Fertility Specialist, SS SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar.

“Health is the main indicator of the progress of any country, and MMR being the most crucial,” experts concluded.
