Mysterious disease spread in Jammu and Kashmir, now 17 people died…doctors also failed in treatment

Srinagar: Four people, including three sisters, have been admitted to the hospital from Badhal village in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. In the last one and a half month, a mysterious disease has taken the lives of 17 people in the district. A central team on Wednesday also continued its investigation into the causes of these deaths in three families in the district. A senior doctor involved in the investigation said that more than 200 samples have been sent to various institutions for testing.

Three sisters, aged between 16 and 22, were shifted from Badhal to Rajouri Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) after their health suddenly deteriorated on Wednesday. Another seriously ill patient, Javed Ahmed (24), was shifted from GMC Rajouri to PGI Chandigarh on Tuesday evening, officials said.

He said all four patients are close relatives of three families who lost their members due to the mysterious disease. Meanwhile, officials said an inter-ministerial team from New Delhi visited Badhal in Kotranka sub-division for the third consecutive day as part of its investigation.

Shuja Qadri, senior epidemiologist and head of the community medicine department of GMC Rajouri, said that from all the investigations so far, it has become clear that the deaths in the village were not the result of any infectious disease. Therefore, testing has been limited to identifying poisons in foods. Qadri, who is involved in the investigation, told PTI, “Based on our investigation so far, we have reached some possible conclusions, which will be confirmed by laboratory diagnosis? “It’s something that has to do with food.”

These deaths took place under suspicious circumstances in the village between December 7 and January 19. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had reached the village for inspection. After this the administration decided to make the village a containment zone.
