First experiment in the country, Disaster Alert System Kavacham launched in Kerala…

Thiruvananthapuram:- Kerala government has launched a new system 'Kavacham' to alert people about natural disaster, crisis and danger. This is India's first fully integrated disaster warning system. Under this, people can be alerted very quickly during disasters. For this, 126 sirens, strobe lights, emergency operation center and a data hub have been established. So far, 91 sirens have been installed across the state, and full implementation is planned at 126 locations.

The initiative is being led by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and funded by the National Disaster Management Authority and the World Bank. It aims to enhance public safety by issuing real-time alerts and warnings through sirens and mobile messages. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, 'This system will allow accurate warning to the general public and rescue forces, thereby ensuring timely rescue efforts.

This system includes emergency operation center, surveillance cameras and control systems operating 24 hours a day. These control rooms are connected through a virtual private network, which will enable quick monitoring of disaster-prone areas and quick response in case of any threat. The system also stores important data such as locations of water bodies, roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and other key infrastructure to aid disaster management.

An important part of the project is public education. Vijayan said, 'It is important to educate people about the warnings issued through sirens and appropriate action.' Currently 91 sirens have been installed under the first phase. The remaining sirens will also be installed in the next phase along with the ongoing operational trials.

How does this work

The 'Kavacham' system has a citizen portal and a 24-hour emergency call centre. People will be able to report threats through this platform. Apart from this, you will be able to ask for help during emergency. Information including the location of the caller will be immediately passed on to nearby rescue teams and the measures will be monitored through the control form. Police, fire brigade, NDRF control units will also be with this network.

Revenue Minister K Rajan highlighted Kerala's role in disaster preparedness in the inaugural session. He said that this state is the first state in the country to establish disaster management committees at the Panchayat level. The government is committed to extend this protection network to all disaster prone areas of Kerala. So that comprehensive security can be ensured during major incidents. As part of its comprehensive efforts, Kerala has already implemented weather warnings through mobile messages and social media.
