Jhulan Goswami honored with stand named after her at Eden Gardens
Legendary cricketer Jhulan Goswami, the former India women’s cricket team skipper and a towering figure in women’s cricket, received a grand tribute as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) unveiled a stand named after her at the iconic Eden Gardens.
This honor celebrates her extraordinary career and enduring impact on women’s cricket.
Born on November 25, 1982, in the town of Chakdaha, West Bengal, Goswami grew up with limited access to cricket facilities, traveling to Kolkata to pursue her passion for the sport. Starting her international career in 2002, she played for the Indian women’s national team until her retirement in 2022, leaving an unparalleled legacy as one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history.
Known for her right-arm medium-fast bowling and all-round skills, Goswami became the highest wicket-taker in Women’s One Day Internationals (ODIs), with 255 wickets in 204 matches. Her accolades include the ICC Women’s Player of the Year Award (2007), the Arjuna Award (2010), and the Padma Shri (2012). She also held the title of the world’s fastest female bowler and served as the captain of the Indian team from 2008 to 2011.
Goswami, whose 255 wickets in women’s ODIs remain the highest by any bowler in the format, expressed her gratitude and disbelief at the honor.
“As a young girl, I always dreamt of playing cricket at Eden Gardens. Today, standing in front of a stand with my name on it feels like a dream I never dared to imagine. Thank you to everyone who’s been part of my cricketing journey,” she shared on her official ‘X’ handle.
Present at the venue, Goswami also performed the ceremonial duty of ringing the bell before the start of the first T20 International between India and England on Wednesday. This heartfelt tribute celebrates not only her immense contributions to cricket but also her inspiration to countless young girls across the nation.
