Bengaluru reports its first suspected case of Mpox
New Delhi: Mpox or monkeypox had stirred a scare wave in parts of the world in 2024, but at the start of 2025 itself, Karnataka was exposed to the same as the state reported its first-ever case of the virus in Bengaluru. A 40-year-old man has tested positive for mpox in Bengaluru and the patient is currently being treated at Victoria Hospital. The patient had recently travelled to Dubai and it is the first case detected this year in India.
On Wednesday, the patient was admitted to Victoria Hospital after complaining of mpox symptoms. At present, the patient is undergoing treatment for the same. Doctors are saying that the same is not a reason to panic or worry about. Earlier in 2024, mpox wreaked havoc in Asia and Africa after hundreds of cases were reported across the continents. In August 2024, citing an increase in cases, the World Health Organisation called mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
In September 2024, India’s first mpox case was reported in Kerala. Then in December, two more confirmed cases were reported in Kerala itself. It is advised to check with a doctor immediately if the symptoms start to appear as timely detection and treatment are key to quicker recovery.
