Anuja: Guneet Monga and Priyanka Chopra-backed film nominated for Oscars 2025
New Delhi: After multiple delays due to the harrowing wildfires in Los Angeles, the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards aka the Oscars 2025 are finally out. Notably, this year Indian cinema has once again carved its place on the global stage. Anujaa film backed by Guneet Monga and Priyanka Chopra secured a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the Oscars 2025.
The nominations were announced on Thursday (January 23) by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott, highlighting this remarkable achievement for the Indian film industry. Out of 180 films that qualified for the category, Anuja has emerged as one of the five nominees, competing alongside Alien, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and A Man Who Would Not Remain Silent.

This marks Guneet Monga’s third nomination at the Oscars, following her previous wins with The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence, further solidifying her contributions to Indian cinema on the world stage. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, making his Oscars debut, the 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Directed by Adam J Graves, Anuja narrates the poignant story of a nine-year-old girl working in a back-alley garment factory alongside her older sister Palak. The film delves into the struggles of working children, capturing a life-altering decision that defines Anuja’s future and her family’s fate. Described by Graves as “a heartfelt tribute to the resilience and untold stories of working children,” the film has resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.
Produced by Graves’ wife, Suchitra Mattai, the film boasts an impressive team of producers including Priyanka Chopra, Mindy Kaling, and Academy Award winner Guneet Monga. It was created in collaboration with the Salaam Baalak Trust, a non-profit founded by Mira Nair’s family supporting street children and Shine Global which is renowned for Academy Award-winning films like War/Dance and Innocent.
Anuja stars Ananya Shanbhag, Sajda Pathan, and Nagesh Bhosle. While its release date on Netflix is yet to be announced, the film’s Oscar nomination has already created a buzz, promising another proud moment for Indian cinema.
