The Academy unveils nominations for best supporting actor categories

Earlier today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the final list of nominees for the categories Actor in a Supporting Role and Actress in a Supporting Role. For best supporting actor Oscar, the nominees comprise Yura Borisov for AnoraKieran Culkin for A Real PainEdward Norton for A Complete UnknownGuy Pearce for The Brutalistand Jeremy Strong for The Apprentice. Culkin is considered the frontrunner for the award, but anything can happen at the last minute in the ceremony. Denzel Washington’s much-celebrated performance in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel failed to make the cut, much to the surprise of many. On the other hand, a familiar name such as Norton returns for the award after multiple nominations in the past. However, this is Pearce’s first Oscar nomination, despite delivering many memorable performances in his career.

For best supporting actress Oscar, the nominees comprise Monica Barbaro for A Complete UnknownAriana Grande for WickedFelicity Jones for The BrutalistIsabella Rossellini for Conclaveand Zoë Saldaña for Emilia Perez. This marks the first Academy Award nomination for Barbaro, Saldaña, Rossellini, and Grande. Only Felicity Jones got an Oscar nod before, for her performance in The Theory of Everything. Saldaña, who won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress, is considered a favourite for the Oscars as well.

Emilia Perez star Selena Gomez’s absence from the supporting actress Oscar category is considered a snub. The same applies to Sing Sing star Clarence Maclin.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 02, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
