Good news for employees, new rules will be implemented from April 1!
New Delhi. The way seems to be clear for a new system for the workers of the country. The central government is moving rapidly towards implementing the new labor law (Labor Code) from April 1, 2026. The Ministry of Labor and Employment has started the process of finalizing the rules related to the four labor codes.
According to the ministry, the rules will soon be pre-published so that the general public and stakeholders can give their opinions for 45 days. After considering the suggestions, they will be notified and the new rules will come into effect. Its objective is to provide more security, better facilities and flexible working arrangements to the workers.
1. New system of working hours and overtime
In the new code, the daily work rule of 8 hours will remain intact but the weekly working time has been fixed at 48 hours. This means that if companies want, they can also implement flexible working arrangements like 4 days more working hours and 3 days off.
Clear provisions have also been added for overtime, so that extra time can be paid properly. This system can play a big role in improving work-life balance.
2. Every employee will get appointment letter
Now it will not be possible to hire any employee without appointment letter. This will clarify the terms and conditions of employment, increase security and transparency of employees, and reduce the possibility of disputes. Along with this, the provision of equal pay for equal work has been strengthened. With this, both men and women will get equal pay for equal work.
3. Free health checkup for employees above 40 years of age
The new rules make free health checkup mandatory for employees in the 40+ age group for the first time. This step is being considered an important improvement towards the health protection of workers.
4. Women have freedom to work in all shifts
The new labor code has ensured that women will be able to work in any shift, day or night. This provision will create more employment opportunities for women and strengthen their participation.
5. The scope of social security will be bigger
The government aims to include 100 crore people in the scope of social security by March 2026. Presently this number is around 94 crores. With the expansion of social security, more and more workers will benefit from pension, insurance and other schemes. The security of workers in the unorganized sector will increase.
6. Center and states will jointly implement the new law
Since labor law is a subject of the ‘Concurrent List’, both the Center and the states will have to notify their own rules to implement the new labor code. Only then will a uniform labor system be implemented in the entire country.
