Delhi: Late veteran leader of BJP Sushma Swaraj Sushman Swaraj’s husband and former governor of Mizoram, senior lawyer Swaraj Kaushal passed away today (December 4, 2025) in Delhi. Record of being the youngest Governor
In 1990, at the age of just 37, he was appointed as the Governor of Mizoram. At that time, he became the youngest governor in the country. He was working in this position till February 9, 1993. Interestingly, his wife Sushma Swaraj also holds the record of becoming the youngest cabinet minister in the country.
Shri Swaraj Kaushal Ji, father of MP and State Minister Ms. Bansuri Swaraj Ji passed away today on December 4, 2025.
His last rites will be performed today on 4th December, 2025 at 4.30 pm at Lodhi Road crematorium.

Political and legal career
Swaraj Kaushal’s political career also remained brilliant. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP in 1998 as a Haryana Development Party candidate and served in this position from 1998 to 2004. During 1998-99, Sushma Swaraj was in the Lok Sabha and Swaraj Kaushal was in the Rajya Sabha. Both were simultaneously Rajya Sabha members from 2000 to 2004.

A key role in the Mizoram Peace Accords
Swaraj Kaushal was considered to be a great connoisseur of the problems of the North-Eastern (North-East) region. He played an important role in the release of underground Mizo leader Laldenga in 1979. He later became the Constitutional Advisor of the Mizo National Front and his efforts led to the Mizoram Peace Accord, which ended the 20-year insurgency. Due to this contribution, he was appointed as the Governor of Mizoram. During the Emergency, George Fernandes and 24 other people were falsely accused in the Baroda Dynamite Case, when Swaraj Kaushal did the job of representing them in the court.
Legal and family life
In December 1986, the Supreme Court granted him the status of Senior Advocate and a year later he became Advocate General. He married Sushma Swaraj, daughter of an ABVP activist and RSS leader, on 13 July 1975. His daughter Bansuri Swaraj is a graduate from Oxford University and is currently working as a barrister in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court. Despite being active in her long public life, Swaraj Kaushal always lived a simple and low-profile life.
