Pakistani media coverage

  • In Pakistani media, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India is being seen mainly in the context of India-Pakistan military balance.
  • Following the recent May 2025 India-Pakistan air war where India used Russian S-400 missile defense systems, Pakistani outlets (such as Dawn, Geo News and ARY News) are portraying the visit as an attempt to strengthen India’s defense capabilities.
  • Reports emphasize that India is moving towards purchasing additional S-400 systems and Su-57 stealth fighter jets, in response to Pakistan’s Chinese J-35 fighter jets.
  • For example, Dawn wrote that “the visit signals India’s willingness to acquire arms from Russia despite Western pressure, which could upset the regional balance of power.”
  • Geo News termed it ‘India’s aggressive defense purchases’, citing Pakistan’s dependence on Chinese arms and warning that it would increase tensions in South Asia.
  • Some reports (such as The News International) mention the 50% tariff imposed by the US Trump administration on India for purchasing Russian oil, but the focus is on Pakistan’s concern that the India-Russia partnership may isolate Pakistan. Overall, the tone is negative and cautious, with Yatra being presented as a ‘regional threat’.

Chinese media coverage

Chinese media, especially state outlets such as Global Times, Xinhua and China Daily, are seeing Putin’s visit to India as a positive step towards strengthening the multi-polar world order. Global Times clearly writes, “India and Russia have sent a message to the world through this visit that the two countries cannot be isolated, and Western sanctions and pressure have very little chance of success.”

India will get strength in border disputes with China: China Daily

Xinhua said in the report that “the visit underlines India-Russia’s strategic autonomy against US pressure, which is beneficial to global stability.” China Daily emphasized that defense deals (S-400 and Su-57) and energy cooperation (Russian oil) would strengthen India’s border disputes with China, but framed it as ‘peaceful cooperation’.

The Global Times editorial also said, “The Putin-Modi summit challenges Western unipolarity, where Russia, India and China are the pillars of multilateralism.” US tariffs and Ukraine war are mentioned in the media, but these are presented as victories for India’s ‘independent foreign policy’. Not a direct criticism, but the visit was said to strengthen the Russia-China-India alliance.
