Madras High Court: Democracy or hooliganism? Targeting the judge who gave verdict on temple dargah dispute proved costly

News India Live, Digital Desk: In the era of social media, people feel that they have the freedom to say anything. Picked up the mobile, switched on the camera and started abusing anyone. Leave aside the leaders, nowadays people are not even abandoning the judges. But the Madras High Court has made it clear today that “enough is enough!” A very sensitive issue is going on in Tamil Nadu, the Thiruparankundram Hill controversy. There was a dispute between the Hindu side and the Dargah present there regarding burning of Karthigai Deepam. Madras High Court had recently given a decision on this, in which permission was given to light the lamp, but with some conditions. Why was the court angry? It is the job of the court to give a decision after listening to both the parties. If someone doesn’t like the decision, they have the option to appeal to a higher court. But some people, especially some YouTubers and social media influencers, crossed all limits. According to the news, Justice G.R. Personal attacks were made on Justice GR Swaminathan and other judges on social media. He was accused of being biased and whatnot. Caste based comments were even made. What did the court say? (It is important to know) When the case was heard today, the anger of the court was worth seeing. The judges said in a stern tone: Criticism can be of the decision, not of the judge. Don’t test our patience. If you point a finger at the judge’s character, we will not tolerate it.” The court has initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against two YouTube channels (Che Mujeeb and others). The court has ordered the police and the government to immediately remove such derogatory videos. What is ‘Lakshman Rekha’? The court explained a very important thing. In a democracy, you have the right to speak, but it does not mean that you Defame the judiciary. If you call him ‘corrupt’ or ‘casteist’ on social media, then the public will lose faith in it. Friends, we often write wrong things on the court’s decisions on WhatsApp groups, but the language is very long. Don’t forget the dignity. Otherwise the notice of “contempt of court” will not take long to come home. Respect the law, this is the identity of a civilized citizen.
