SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi Sets New Benchmark as Global OTT Bids Near Rs 1000 Crore

SS Rajamouli’s upcoming epic Varanasi—slated for a Sankranthi 2027 release—has already emerged as one of the most sought-after Indian films on the global stage. Featuring an ensemble cast including Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra in her return to Indian cinema, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film is generating remarkable pre-release momentum in international and domestic markets alike.

Record-Breaking Digital Rights Interest

Industry sources indicate that Varanasi has become the hottest Indian title in the global streaming ecosystem. Following the massive worldwide success of RRR and the historic performance of Baahubali 2, Rajamouli’s reputation has soared across international markets.

Owing to this global recognition, several major streaming platforms are reportedly engaged in aggressive bidding for the film’s digital rights. Early estimates suggest that the final figure could approach an unprecedented ₹1000 crore, placing Varanasi in the same league as high-budget Hollywood productions.

If the deal materialises, it will set a new record for India’s pre-release digital rights valuation. When combined with satellite rights, music rights, and theatrical distribution, Varanasi is positioned to become the most commercially significant Indian film ever produced.

About the Film

Rajamouli unveiled the film’s title and first-look video in November during a grand event at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The three-minute concept video hints at an expansive narrative that intertwines science fiction with elements inspired by the Ramayana, spanning continents and eras.

Mahesh Babu leads the cast, with Priyanka Chopra returning to Indian cinema in a pivotal role. Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays the film’s antagonist. Featuring one of the largest production budgets in Indian film history, Varanasi promises scale, ambition, and a global cinematic vision.
