From China to Palestine… Why did President Macron’s new move increase Washington’s tension?
Emmanuel Macron Foreign Policy: Signs of change are beginning to appear in the long-standing traditional alliance between Europe and America. Especially the recent actions of French President Emmanuel Macron have deepened the question whether Paris is now really distancing itself from Washington? Several diplomatic incidents and statements have further heated up this discussion.
Macron’s three-day visit to China greatly clarifies the direction of Europe’s future foreign policy. During this visit, he emphasized on increasing cooperation in trade, investment, aviation and energy sectors.
America’s policy on Ukraine issue
However, the most important aspect was that Macron wanted to bring China together to increase pressure on Russia, so that the way for a possible ceasefire in Ukraine could be opened. This move made it clear that France was no longer following US policy on the Ukraine issue in letter and spirit. Macron has openly said that Europe should develop its own independent diplomatic identity instead of depending on America.
Direct attack on American policies
The leaked report of the German newspaper Der Spiegel created a stir in European politics. According to the report, in a confidential conversation Macron claimed that the US could in the future pressure Ukraine to leave the land without concrete security guarantees.
He also said that influential faces of the Trump administration such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner cannot be trusted. This statement of Macron was seen as increasing distrust towards America.
Relations sour due to American criticism
US Ambassador Charles Kushner’s statement that anti-Semitism in France was at an alarming level and putting the Macron government in the dock brought unexpected tension in the relationship between the two countries.

In an open letter in the Wall Street Journal, he accused France of not taking action and appealed to Macron to reduce his criticism of Israel. France considered this an interference in its autonomy and decided to summon the US ambassador. This dispute clearly shows that trust between the two countries is decreasing.
Middle East policy
The Macron government has recently moved forward the process of recognizing Palestine as an independent state. The move runs in stark contrast to US policy in the Middle East, where Washington has openly sided with Israel. France has said recognition of Palestine is now just “a question of time”. This clearly indicates that Paris is no longer ready to follow America’s lead in its Middle East policy.
