India will have to immediately develop sovereign AI capability, there is a danger of increasing dependence on foreign companies.
Maharashtra Energy AI Project: Artificial Intelligence in the country (AIAmidst the growing demand for AI and the changing global technological landscape, India will have to rapidly develop its indigenous AI capabilities. Former CEO of NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant, during an event in Mumbai, clearly warned that if India does not take action now, it will have to depend on foreign companies, which are already using Indian data to strengthen their models.
Strengthening domestic AI infrastructure is the need of the hour
Amitabh Kant said the country’s technological progress will depend on how quickly it develops its computing infrastructure, ensures security of sensitive data and provides strong support to indigenous AI startups. “Digital public infrastructure has massively increased inclusion, but the country’s lagging computing capacity threatens to slow our progress,” he said. According to Kant, India has vast data, but due to lack of computational resources, domestic models are not being developed as fast as possible.
AI technology will bring big changes in the energy sector
The use of AI in the energy sector in Maharashtra is going to usher in a new transformation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that with the help of artificial intelligence, the foundation of a sustainable, environment-friendly and economically strong energy system is being laid in the state. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (Mahavitaran) has launched an AI based digitization project in collaboration with international organizations. This project is being implemented in partnership with the following institutions:
- The Rockefeller Foundation
- Global Energy Alliance for People & Planet
- Energy Department, Maharashtra
The innovative concept of using ‘Digital Twin’ technology in the power distribution system came to the fore in the meeting held between Chief Minister Fadnavis and Rockefeller Foundation Chairman Dr. Rajiv Shah in January this year. This technology will help in real-time monitoring, management and assessment of future needs of power distribution.

AI will lead to development on a large scale
Experts believe that the use of AI in the energy sector will improve grid management, reduce power theft and losses, provide more reliable supply to consumers, significantly improve the energy efficiency of the state, this initiative will not only make Maharashtra a leading state in adopting modern technology in energy management, but will also give a new impetus to India’s AI-based infrastructure development.
