Dharmendra’s superhit film, in the making of which Russia had a big hand

Relations between Russia and India are not only based on political foundation, there are also cultural and trade relations between the two countries, which make these relations stronger. The cultural relations between the two countries are very old and much of the credit for this also goes to Hindi cinema. Some artists of Hindi cinema left their mark on the markets of Soviet Union through their films. One of them was actor Dharmendra Deol, who died on 24 November 2025 after age-related ailments.

Although many of Dharmendra’s films were released in Russia, but the name of his “Alibaba and Chalis Chor” can be taken prominently. The film “Alibaba and the Forty Thieves” was not only produced under the banner of an Indian company, but the film was co-produced by Eagle Films of India and Uzbekfilm Studio of the Soviet Union. The film not only proved to be a superhit in India, but its magic worked in Russia as well.

The film was released in Russian and became the highest-grossing film in both countries. The film ran continuously for 25 weeks in Indian theaters and grossed Rs 3 crore in India. In the Soviet Union also, the film had a great earning of around Rs 2 crores. This film made Dharmendra a global icon.

After its release in Russia, the romantic chemistry of Dharmendra and Hema Malini in the film “Alibaba Aur Chalis Chor” was greatly appreciated. Dharmendra is already being liked in India because of his beauty, but in Russia also he got a different identity because of his personality and handsome face.

Apart from “Alibaba Aur Chalis Chor”, Dharmendra’s film ‘Dharamveer’ also proved to be a hit in Russia. The film emerged as the second biggest hit of the year 1997 and more than 3 crore tickets of the film were sold in Russia. The film had spread its magic on Indian theaters for almost 50 weeks and because of this film, fans had given him the tag of ‘Iron’ Man.
