Brisbane, Gabba: Australian players have made a great start in the second Test match of the ongoing Ashes series between Australia and England. This match is being played in day-night format at the Gabba ground in Brisbane, where the new opening pair Travis Head and Jake Weatherald have performed brilliantly.
Both the batsmen made a partnership of 77 runs for the first wicket, breaking a special record of India’s Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The Australian team currently appears to be in a strong position in this match.
Broken record of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill
Now Australia holds the record for the largest opening partnership in a day-night test. Earlier this record was held by India, in which Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made an unbeaten partnership of 49 runs for the first wicket while playing against England in Ahmedabad in 2021. Now Travis Head and Jake Weatherald have left that record behind by adding 77 runs.
equaling David Warner’s record
Interestingly, this is the highest opening partnership for the Australian team in a day-night test. Earlier in 2022, Usman Khawaja and David Warner had also made a partnership of 77 runs against West Indies at Gabba. Head and Weatherald have now equaled that number.
Weatherald showed aggressive style
In the beginning of the match, the English bowlers put a lot of pressure, but both the Australian batsmen remained patient and performed brilliantly. Travis Head, who is usually known for his aggressive batting, showed composure in this match. At the same time, debutant Jake Weatherald put pressure on the English bowlers through boundaries. Together, this pair completely neutralized the English bowling.
The match is still exciting
England scored 334 runs in their first innings thanks to Joe Root’s brilliant century. Now Australia seems to be in a strong position. Head scored 33 runs in this match and was out, while Jake scored 72 runs in 78 balls.
