New system implemented for electricity consumers in UP

Auraiya: A new system has been implemented for electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh, the aim of which is to make the process of recovering electricity dues transparent and effective. Earlier, to recover dues, linemen had to go door-to-door to disconnect connections, leading to huge wastage of time and resources. Moreover, the problem became more complex as the arrears increased.

Now this process is being completely digitalized and automated through smart meters. Smart meters will ensure that consumers whose bills are outstanding will not be able to use electricity without paying. This means that no lineman will have to be sent to disconnect the connection, rather the meter will automatically stop the power supply if the bill is not paid.

Genus Company has started the work of installing smart meters in Auraiya district from December 2023. About 11 thousand meters have been installed so far. A target has been set to install smart meters in the homes and establishments of about 2.5 lakh consumers of Auraiya and Dibiyapur divisions by March 2026.

The facility of recharge system will also be provided in the smart meter. This means that consumers will be able to use the same amount of electricity as they recharge. The old tricks of the defaulters will no longer work and the electricity of big defaulters can be cut off at any time. This rule is also applicable for the meters which have already been installed. If a consumer does not pay the bill, the connection will be immediately closed through the computer system.

According to Executive Engineer Meter Santosh Kumar, now only smart meters will be installed on new connections also. Its objective is to make electricity distribution transparent and prevent arrears. This will not only create the habit of timely payment among the consumers, but will also make the distribution process simple and accurate for the electricity company.
