Jason Bateman Just Revealed His Go-To Midnight Snack—and It’s Just 3 Ingredients
- Jason Bateman calls grilled cheese with bread, cheese and butter his top late-night snack.
- He always butters the bread for a crispy finish, saying it’s the secret to a great melt.
- Bateman jokes he usually sleeps soundly and rarely rises for a midnight snack.
Zootopia 2 star Jason Bateman is known for his dry humor and many projects, from the prestige drama Ozark to his Smartless podcast, where he frequently makes jokes about his rigorous diet. However, in a new Snack Awards video from LadBible, Bateman shares his go-to midnight snack, and it is none other than a classic comfort food: grilled cheese.
Bateman talked to Dan Merrifield for LadBible’s Snack Awards segment, where they crown a celebrity’s greatest snacks of all time. He loves a simple grilled cheese—bread, cheese and butter—for a late-night bite. “Absolutely the best midnight snack,” Bateman says after awarding the sandwich. “It doesn’t take a lot of effort. It hits the spot.”
To make his grilled cheese, Bateman puts a little butter on the bread “to make the bread crispy,” he says. No word on what kind of butter Bateman uses or if he’s tried the Tillamook “butternaise” (he should!). Bateman notes that while some people don’t bother buttering the bread, it’s the only way to get the texture and flavor right.
Bateman also didn’t specify bread or cheese preference. While white bread and American cheese are a classic preparation, when we asked seven chefs, they said that other great cheese choices include Gruyère, Cheddar and havarti. Mixing cheeses adds complexity. Any mild cheese that melts well and stretches is a good choice.
As for bread, you really can’t go wrong—though we love our Whole-Wheat Sourdough Bread for sandwiches. No matter what bread you choose, our chefs say bread that’s a day or two old works best for grilled cheese.
Health-conscious Bateman might also add in some ingredients to make his grilled cheese heartier, such as spinach and tomato. We love using grilled cheese as a canvas for lots of flavor, including veggies or even something like chicken salad for a cozy melt.
Bateman’s award for Best Midnight Snack does come with one caveat: he’s rarely awake at midnight. “I sleep through hurricanes,” he jokes in the video. But if he were to wake up in need of a bite, he’d make grilled cheese—and we’re right there with him.
However you customize your gloriously cheesy sandwich, we’re pretty sure it will be delicious anytime, day or night.
