Pakistan Army Calls Imran Khan Mental Threat

The Pakistan Army has launched a strong attack on the country’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, terming him mentally ill and alleging that he is creating a dangerous narrative against the army and the state, which has become a direct threat to national security. In a press conference held in Rawalpindi on Friday (December 5), DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary said that Imran Khan, despite being in jail, is instigating the public against the army through social media.

Ahmed Sharif said, “This mentally ill person is tweeting to create a narrative against Pakistan Armed Forces… Imran Khan’s narrative has become a threat to national security.” DG ISPR alleged that Khan’s entire political campaign is based on personal ambition and he is trying to shine his politics at the cost of the country’s stability.

Lieutenant General Chaudhary said that no political leader can try to create a rift between the army and civilians. “One thinks that if not him, then nothing. He has now become a threat to national security. Keep the army out of politics,” he said. He also raised questions as to how Imran Khan is holding political meetings while being in jail. He asked, “Which law says that a prisoner should meet people and create a narrative against the state and the army?”

Tension between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the army is continuously increasing. Recently, Imran Khan had accused Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir of pleasing western countries by increasing tension with Afghanistan and harming the real interests of Pakistan. Imran Khan had said that the policies of the army leadership were leading to disaster.

The Army has made it clear that no leader of the country will be allowed to make such statements, which it considers dangerous to the security and institutions of the state.

This statement from the army has come at a time when Imran Khan is continuously challenging the power structure of Pakistan through his political messages, while he himself is in jail after being convicted and arrested in several cases.
