CM Rekha Gupta’s big statement on Delhi pollution: ‘I don’t have any magic wand!’

New Delhi: The increasing population of Delhi and the huge number of vehicles have brought the capital under the grip of pollution. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta clearly said in the HT Leadership Summit 2025 that this problem of Delhi is decades old and it requires time and continuous hard work to fix it.

He said that his government has been working at full speed for the last 10 months and is taking a step forward in controlling pollution every day.

Pollution a ‘legacy problem’

The Chief Minister said that Delhi’s smog and air-poisoning pollution is not a new thing, it is a legacy that has been going on for decades. He stressed that there is no ‘magic wand’ that will fix everything overnight. Rekha Gupta said that solving such big issues requires continuous effort and patience, and the government is taking a step forward every day to control it.

Lockdown is not an option

Rekha Gupta made it clear that a strict step like lockdown is not possible in a huge city like Delhi. He cited increasing population and number of vehicles as the major causes of pollution. He said, ‘We have to run the city and also fight pollution. We are adopting every possible method.

The CM made a scathing attack on the old governments of AAP and Congress, what did they do for pollution after being in power for decades? He said that his government is taking steps in just 10 months which were never taken before. He bluntly said that the present government is busy on every front to provide relief to the people of Delhi.

Yamuna and open drainage improvements

Rekha Gupta laid great emphasis on cleaning the Yamuna river. He told that all the big drains of the capital fall into Yamuna and as soon as he came to power, his government started taking action on these. He clarified that the cleaning work is not going on for one day but on a ‘war footing’.

Government took steps

The Chief Minister said that to stop burning of wood in the open, heaters have been distributed and relief is being provided through sprinkler system. He rejected rumors that only water was being sprinkled around AQI monitoring sites. He said that all steps are being taken keeping in mind pollution control and people’s safety.
