Supreme Court is for the common man: CJI

  • Need for upgrade in judiciary

New Delhi. The country’s Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant said in a statement on Saturday that the Supreme Court is for the common man. He said that integrated national judicial policy to settle the pending cases is his first priority. The CJI also said that his effort is to reduce the cost of litigation and set a deadline for deciding the case.

Speaking during the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, CJI Justice Surya Kant said, my first priority is to create a fixed time frame and a unified national judicial policy so that the pending cases can be decided quickly. I am not saying that all the pending cases will be closed. This will never happen. This should not happen because litigation is a continuous process. People have faith and trust in the judicial system. CJI said, ‘New cases will be filed, but it is also necessary to dispose of old cases. Mediation will also be used and this can prove to be a game changer.

The Chief Justice said, some reforms will be seen in the Supreme Court in the coming days and litigation will continue to get priority. The CJI said, ‘I want to give a strong and clear message that the Supreme Court is for the common man and there is enough space in the Supreme Court for ordinary litigation also. However, he also said that he cannot do this work alone and he needs the support of other judges also.

The Chief Justice also said that there is a need for upgrade in the judiciary as the challenges of the judiciary have increased due to cases like digital arrest and cyber crime. He said that the judiciary of the country is diversifying and as the society and the country are progressing, changes are also taking place in the judiciary. The Chief Justice described the future of the country’s democracy and judiciary as bright.

On the independence of the judiciary, he said, ‘Powers have been divided in the Constitution. Judiciary, legislature and executive have their own roles in the Constitution and no power interferes in the jurisdiction of the other power. Besides, the beauty of the Constitution is that these three powers work together and there is interdependence of the three.
