X fined Rs 1,080 crore for violation of digital rules, questions raised on transparency

Blue Checkmark Issue: European Union (EU) banned Elon Musk’s social media platform X But the strictest action has been taken so far for violation of digital security rules. The EU has imposed a huge fine of 120 million euros (about Rs 1,080 crore) on X for violating the Digital Services Act (DSA). The EU Commission says that

According to the European Commission, the X platform did not comply with DSA standards that aim to protect users from scams, misinformation and fake content.
The EU clarified that any negligence or breach of the DSA could lead to significant financial action, and X committed serious negligence.

Serious questions on Blue Checkmark

The EU alleges that the Blue Checkmark on the X was designed to mislead users. The Commission says that this design could have encouraged scammers and those creating fake accounts, because users could not understand on what basis the blue tick was given. The EU has described it as a “deceptive design”, which is completely against online security standards.

Opaqueness in advertising database, problems for researchers

EU rules mandate that all platforms provide an open and transparent database of their ads. It should be clear who placed the advertisement, who was targeted, and what was its objective. But X’s advertising database was not only found to be incomplete, but it also caused unreasonable delays in accessing data. Because of this, analysts and researchers found it difficult to identify fake ads and propaganda.

EU calls ban on data access for researchers a big crime

According to the investigation report, X deliberately created barriers to data access for researchers. The EU’s Executive Vice-President clearly stated, “Cheating, hiding ads and hindering research are unacceptable in European digital laws. The DSA’s very existence is to prevent such activities.”
