10 blackbucks died due to infection in Tata Zoo, alert in Ormanjhi
Jamshedpur: 10 blackbucks died in Tata Steel Zoological Park between December 1 and 6. The last blackbuck died on Saturday. In the initial investigation, death is said to be due to Pasteurella bacteria. It is also called a fatal disease called hemorrhagic septicemia. According to the park management, there were a total of 18 blackbucks in the zoo, out of which only 8 are now alive. As soon as the matter came to light, the zoo administration started spraying anti-bacterial medicines in the enclosures. After the incident at Tata Zoo in Jamshedpur, Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park located in Ormanjhi, Ranchi has been put on alert.

First death on December 1, samples sent to Ranchi for testing
Deputy director of Tata Zoo, Naeem Akhtar said that the first death of blackbuck occurred on 1 December. After this, every day a new case came to light, due to which the situation became serious. After consecutive deaths, post-mortem of all the bodies was conducted and the samples were sent to Ranchi Veterinary College. According to Pragya Lakra, Assistant Professor of Pathology Department of the college, in the initial investigation the cause of death has been attributed to hemorrhagic septicemia. This disease is spread by a bacteria called Pasteurella, which is also called pasteurellosis. He said that the final report will be released on Monday, after which official confirmation of the disease will be possible.

He told that Pasteurella bacteria spreads very rapidly throughout the body. It directly attacks the lungs. MK Gupta said that after being affected by this bacteria, animals have difficulty in breathing. Along with high fever, problems like swelling in the neck occur. Diarrhea is its main symptom. According to Gupta, this infection is so severe that sometimes the animal dies suddenly even before treatment can be started. This is the reason why the blackbucks of Tata Zoo kept dying.

Report sent to CZA, strict monitoring of zoo administration
Jamshedpur’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Saba Alam said that on the request of the zoo management, all the samples have been sent to Ranchi for testing. Also, detailed information about these deaths has been given to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). Zoo’s Deputy Director Naeem Akhtar claimed that now the situation is under control. The surviving blackbucks are being given anti-bacterial drugs, fogging, spraying to disinfect the enclosures and 24/7 monitoring of all animals.
