Bowling controversy in Cuttack, spectators did dirty acts in the match against South Africa

Cuttack: The first match of the 5-match T20 series between India and South Africa will be held at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Matches between the two teams have been played on this ground before, but Cuttack became the talk of the town due to a controversial incident, which later proved to have an impact on international matches.

unusual audience behavior

This incident happened in 2015 when South Africa played a 3-match T-20 series against India. The first match of this series was held in Dharamsala, in which South Africa won. In the second match, which was played on 5 October in Cuttack, the performance of the Indian team was disappointing and dissatisfaction started spreading among the spectators.

water bottles thrown

India batted first, but the entire team was all out for just 92 runs. The spectators were hopeful that the team would perform well under the captaincy of Dhoni, but when the South African team moved towards victory by scoring 64 runs in 11 overs, the angry spectators started throwing water bottles on the field.

The need to suspend the match

An attempt was made to restart the match after about 19 minutes, but the spectators again started rioting and throwing bottles. Due to this, the umpire had to take a decision to call the players off the field, and a situation arose leading to cancellation of the match.

attempt to control the audience

However, the police and Odisha Cricket Association officials tried to pacify the spectators by explaining them. Play eventually restarted and South Africa won the match and took a 2–0 series lead.

Impact of disputed incident

After this incident, many veteran cricketers demanded to ban Cuttack Stadium from hosting international matches. Sunil Gavaskar suggested that it should be banned for at least two years. Although this did not happen, no international match was held here for the next two years. This incident is still considered one of the controversial moments of Indian cricket.
